The Mental Health Assistant provides physical and psychological support to mental health patients, under supervision of the Patient Care Manager and Charge Nurse. Provides clerical and reception functions such as computer entry, visitor reception, etc.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:Provides mental health inpatients with supportive social therapy. Talks to patients, listens to their problems and perceptions. Attempts to establish a rapport with the patients. Works with patients one:to:one and in group activities providing social support.
:Receives client assignments. Presents observations, problems and suggestions for interventions to the Charge Nurse and records observations on patient charts. Provides input into treatment plan for assigned patients. Assists in intervention, evaluations and establishment of appropriate treatment goals.
:Assists patients in the activities of daily living; shaving, bathing, meals (including transport of meal trays), personal laundry activities, skin care, specimen collection and ambulation as necessary.
:Performs intake and output procedures, measures temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, daily weights, and dietary intake. Accurately records information on a graphic sheet or in the medical record, according to department procedure.
:Recognizes and reports changes in psycho:social and emotional conditions promptly to charge nurse. Intervenes as needed according to established procedures.
:Escorts patients to other areas of the Medical Center, delivers lab work to Laboratory, obtains miscellaneous supplies, etc. using standard precautions as needed.
:Performs a variety of support clerical/service duties, such as answering phone, monitoring visiting hours, completing room and supply checks, making beds, pulling treatment plans for physicians, assembling charts and/or admission packs, preparing profile sheets for next shift. Assists in orientation of new mental health assistant personnel.
:Participates in Medical Center or unit committees according to departmental and personal needs. Provides for continued professional development through in:service education.
:Orders supplies and maintains work area (including kitchen) according to established guidelines and procedures to assure an adequate stock of supplies and nourishments and to provide a neat and orderly environment for patients.
:Provides and maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors and employees.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
College courses in Psychology preferred.
Proficient in Microsoft Office software (Word).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
CPR certification required. Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Certification must be obtained within the first week of department orientation.
